Taking steroid tablets for less than 3 weeks is unlikely to cause any significant side effects. But you may get some side effects if you need to take them for longer or at a high dose.

Some other skin problems, such as rosacea, acne and ulcers, can be made worse by steroid creams so you might not be able to take them if you have any of these conditions. You might not be able to start steroids if you have an infection, or if you have any wounds on your body, as steroids might delay these getting better or cover up some of your symptoms.

For that reason, it is especially important to be completely open with your doctor about what drugs you use, prescription or not. If you are about to start taking prednisone and tend to be a regular drinker or you abuse alcohol, you must talk to your doctor before starting the prescription. Remember always to be honest with your doctor about your drinking habits. Prednisone is a steroid, so it can have a lot of side-effects on its own.

Steroids can weaken bones, which can lead to a condition known as osteoporosis. This condition makes it more likely that you’ll fracture your bones, sometimes after very minor falls or bumps. In children and teenagers, steroids can sometimes cause growth to slow down, so they’ll need to have their height checked regularly.

If you’re taking steroid tablets continuously you should be under the care of a respiratory specialist. Your symptoms get worse each time you come off a short course of steroid tablets. If you're taking aspirin to reduce your risk of blood clots and you forget to take a dose, take that dose as soon as you remember. You should then continue to take your course of aspirin as normal. It can relieve pain and reduce the risk of serious problems like heart attacks and strokes.
